About

Welcome to Australia’s newest photographic portrait competition — the inaugural Fremantle Portrait Prize. This competition is well on the way to becoming one of our State's most prestigious photographic awards.

Whether formal or candid, at home or abroad the search for a memorable portrait has been with us ever since Joseph Nicephore Niepce produced the world’s first photograph in 1825. A photograph of a love or lost love is as important as a heart beat. Kevin Shegog, in his ballad, laments his lost love but says I still have ‘One Small Photograph of You’. The famous, the infamous, the heroes, the villains, the beautiful and the real humans can all be brought to sharp focus by a lens and black box. Every human with a camera in their hands automatically becomes a visual historian. Treasured images of our parents and grandparents are handed down like family heirlooms and we wear our shutters out photographing our first-born.

Most importantly, portraits deal with human beings and human feelings.

The resulting portrait is more than just a collection of pixels on a sensor of grains of silver in emulsion. The portrait is an iconic representation of the relationship between photographer and subject.

All proceeds from the competition will go to the Arthritis and Osteoporosis WA – a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to Care, Education and Research in Bone and Joint Disorders.
